Nonprofit Board Members are stewards of the assets of an organization and provide foresight, oversight, and insight. They are often compared with crows perched on the crows nest, scouting for storm clouds and rainbows. They do not have the responsibility of every day operations, but they have to be able to look at the bigger picture.
No matter if your nonprofit is an established or start-up, there are many sources to help find board members who are suitable. One of the most effective ways to find board members is to reach out to existing volunteers. Take a look at your current events and committees. Also, look for individuals who could be great leadership. You can also use social media and newsletters to promote the positions on your board to your community.
Search job boards such as Impact Opportunity or Idealist for non-profits and mission-driven organizations. Additionally, search within your professional field to find people who are associated with nonprofits through their professional associations or companies who donate to them. If you come across a few people who seem to be good candidates Contact them and inquire whether they’re interested in joining your board.
Remember that, just like every staff member, new board members need to receive an in-depth orientation so that they understand their roles and commitment. This includes a list of clear expectations regarding attendance at meetings as well as schedules, fundraising and the responsibilities for which members are chosen (e.g. budget management) and other governance guidelines.
